Medical Student in National and
Kapodistrian University of Athens
August 2009,
Columbia University
Laboratory of Ira J. Goldberg
In the beginning of my third medical year I was really wondering about my future plans including of course
my residency. I had heard about this research opportunity when I was in my first year of medical studies when president
of the HBA-USA, Dr. Konstantinos Drosatos made a speech in collaboration with Hellenic Medical Student’s International Committee in
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. United States of America is a possible destination of residency of graduated medical
students so I would like to experience the way of working and living in this country. So I did my application and I prepared all the needed
documents and sent to the HBA-USA address. And that was it.
They accepted me to the Columbia University School of Medicine College of Physicians & Surgeons in research program called “the
toxic influence of lips to myocardium” under supervision of Dr. Konstantinos Drosatos. I was working in the laboratory from 9:30 until 17:00
and sometimes later if the experiment hadn’t finished.
I learnt and practised basic molecular techniques such as purifying RNA , photometry RNA ,generation C-DNA, PCR that I hadn’t the
opportunity to get practised in my University. Analytically, during my first week I was studying some papers about the background of
research topic and I wrote a report about that. From second until fourth week I did the following experiments: infections of AC-16 cells
with different adenoviruses that express mutated forms of FOXO1 and are associated with fatty acids, RNA purification, c-DNA generation
and finally Real-Time PCR analysis for several genes that are associated with cardiac lipotoxicity. Finally I presented the results of this
research program in the meeting of laboratory that I was working and wrote a report about that.
About the economical part of exchange :the cost of lodging, if you don’t have any friend that you can stay (the best option), is about
1000 $.There are apartments service offices that they can provide you with information through internet bus sometimes you have to pay
application fee. About the boarding, you have the chance to taste a lot of different cuisines but I proposed you the cooked home food(it
is something usual in New York )because you don’t have the time during working hours to sit in a restaurant, just only in cafeteria of
Hospital.
Hope this piece of information to help you in your decision if you want to apply or if you have already been accepted to help to your
living in New York.
