We study the beneficial effects of mutations generated by cytidine deamination. Specifically, we are interested in how cytidine deamination mediates the generation of somatic mutations in antibody genes (which increase affinity for antibody to antigen); the role of cytidine deamination as a defensive weapon against viral infection; and the role of cytidine deamination in inducible gene conversion in mammalian as well as non-mammalian systems
